Our Lineage

This is the tradition of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Our school is a continuation of this tradition.

Lineage can be defined as the ancestry of an individual; the record of their evolution.

In martial arts, an individual’s lineage includes those who influenced, mentored, and instructed them, going back through generations.

Marcelo Pereira is part of a unique and accomplished lineage. It’s a lineage that leads back to Maeda and Gracie. Along the way, it includes Wendell Alexander and Andre Pederneiras, the co-founders of Nova União, one of the most successful producers of champions in mixed martial arts and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. (BJJ Heroes)

It was with Nova União that Marcelo won several world championships and trained with other champions such as BJ Penn, Leo Santos, Robson Moura, Bruno Bastos, Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro, and more.

It matters who teaches you because you are being taught not only by your instructor but also by those who taught them, and so on.

Wendell and Pedernerias came together to form Nova Uniao, and they taught Marcelo Pereira

A Martial Arts Tradition

A martial arts tradition is established when an original style or method is adopted and passed down through generations.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was created in Brazil around 1914 when Mitsuyo Maeda, a nomadic Japanese judo master and accomplished prizefighter, taught Carlos Gracie his art. Carlos’ brother, Helio, then also began training.

Helio Gracie took what he learned and adapted it to his own vision of what a martial art should be: the triumph of human intelligence over brute strength.

Helio’s art was put to the test many times in no-rules competitions and was found to be effective. Because it worked, and because of its unique ability to defeat larger opponents and other martial arts, it became very popular, and students of Gracie began to spread it around the world.

Team Marcelo Pereira is a super welcoming place with amazing coaches. They are very supportive of adults with no experience, and their fundamentals class really is perfect for beginners. The coaches are always very encouraging, and they also take safety seriously, making sure you and your partners stay safe whole rolling. It can be intimidating starting a new sport as an adult, especially as a female, but they foster such a supportive and welcoming environment that anyone will feel at ease and be able to make friends quickly!
