Gi Class

You can attend your first class in comfortable athletic clothes, like a t-shirt and shorts or leggings. If you already have a gi, you are welcome to wear it.

If you decide to sign up to continue training, we require you to wear our team gi. It helps create consistency, teaches respect for the environment, and helps everyone feel like part of the group. We will help you get the right gear when the time comes.

No-Gi Class

For your first class, you can wear a fitted athletic shirt or rash guard and shorts or leggings without pockets.

If you decide to sign up and continue training, we require you to wear our team rash guard and shorts. This helps create consistency and keeps the mats clean and organized.

We will guide you through the gear process when the time is right.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions? These are some of the most common things our women students have asked before stepping onto the mat for the first time.

Do I need to be in shape to start?

No, you don’t need to get fit before trying class. This program is beginner-friendly and helps you build strength, confidence, and skill over time, starting from wherever you are.

Who will I be training with?

This is a women-only class at our Fort Myers location. You’ll be training with other women in a supportive and respectful setting, led by instructors who focus on clear guidance and a comfortable pace.

Can I bring my child with me while I train?

Yes, we have quite a few students that are parents, and we designed our facility with that in mind! There’s a space where kids can hang out while you train. There are also benches near the mat and a waiting area with couches and a TV in the front lobby, so you can stay focused knowing your child is nearby.

Team Marcelo Pereira is a super welcoming place with amazing coaches. They are very supportive of adults with no experience, and their fundamentals class really is perfect for beginners. The coaches are always very encouraging, and they also take safety seriously, making sure you and your partners stay safe whole rolling. It can be intimidating starting a new sport as an adult, especially as a female, but they foster such a supportive and welcoming environment that anyone will feel at ease and be able to make friends quickly!

Today, Taber put on one of his best performances at the highest level of competition in the world — the IBJJF World Championship. After three incredible wins against very tough opponents, he lost a very close semifinal match by referee decision after a hard-fought 2–2 battle. A decision I personally didn’t agree with, but that’s part of the game.Today was special for me. Having both him and my daughter competing on the same day brought back great memories of my own journey in this sport.I saw this kid walk into my gym a little over a year ago with a dream — to become a champion. After teaching Jiu-Jitsu for over 30 years, you learn to recognize when someone has something different.I saw a true love for Jiu-Jitsu in this kid — not just someone chasing a gold medal. The commitment alone spoke volumes. Driving 1 hour and 30 minutes every single day to train at my gym made me want to give my very best to help him achieve his dream.I told him from day one: “Focus and patience. We have a lot to work on.”Only two months after joining the gym, he fought both the Pan Ams and Worlds and lost his first match in both. But what impressed me most wasn’t the losses — it was his attitude afterward. This kid is a man of very few words 😂 I think I got maybe 10 words out of him in the last 15 months. But today, his posture, confidence, and attitude at the World Championship showed everyone that he is no longer the same kid who walked into the gym a year ago. He is becoming a true athlete and a strong young man.Winning a bronze medal at the World Championship against one of the toughest brackets in the world showed that you are not just another name in the bracket — you are here to take your place.Taber, I’m very proud of you. Hard work is paying off. Stay focused and patient — you are on the right path.Congratulations on your World Championship bronze medal 🥉Now welcome to the elite athlete life… harder training starts now 😂
My daughter competed, for the very first time, in the biggest Jiu-Jitsu event in the world: the IBJJF World Championship as a blue belt.Even after dedicating my entire life to Jiu-Jitsu, I thought I was prepared for this moment. But the adrenaline of standing on the outside, being both a coach and a father at the same time, is simply indescribable.I truly have no words to describe how proud and happy I am. Sometimes I feel like she does this even more for me than for herself. Kyla shares the same love for Jiu-Jitsu that I have, but she has always struggled with controlling her emotions before competitions — and I know how difficult that can be for her.But as both a coach and a father, I also know how important it is to learn how to deal with those emotions. Learning to control emotions, stay focused, and overcome anxiety is a life lesson — not just something for the mats.Today, I watched my little girl compete in her first World Championship like a giant. She fought 3 matches, winning the first two by submission and losing the final by referees’ decision in a very tough match, tied 1–1 on advantages. She had an almost flawless World Championship run, without giving up a single point. In the end, we came so close. It wasn’t the ending she wanted, nor the one this coach and father had hoped for.But I’m going home incredibly proud of the young woman she is becoming — overcoming anxiety, facing insecurities, and showing tremendous strength. This time, the gold medal didn’t come, but I’m bringing home something even greater: immense pride in my little girl.I love you, daughter ❤️🙏
Two athletes. Two World medals. One academy. This past Friday, Kyla Pereira and Taber Jordan represented Team Marcelo Pereira on the biggest stage in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and returned home as IBJJF World Medalists. Let that sink in for a moment. Earning a medal at the World Championship is one of the rarest accomplishments in our sport, and having two athletes from the same local academy stand among the best in the world is something you simply do not see in every town. These results are not luck. They are the product of world class instruction, a culture of excellence, years of hard work, and a commitment to developing athletes at the highest level. While many schools talk about success, Team Marcelo Pereira continues to produce it on the sport’s biggest stages. If you are looking for proof of the quality of training, dedication, and leadership within our academy, look no further. From Fort Myers to the World Championship podium, our athletes continue to show that Team Marcelo Pereira stands in a class of its own in Southwest Florida. OSS!
